Laser effects for theatrical productions

In the theatre, a single lighting cue can achieve a great deal. It can accentuate a movement, build tension or give a scene a different atmosphere. We design laser effects that complement the performance and align with what direction and technical crew want to convey.

The scene determines the effect

We begin with the function of the laser in the performance. What happens on the stage? Where does the attention need to go? And how does the effect relate to the set, actors and existing lighting?

From there we work on the setup and the moments when the lasers will be deployed.

Discuss cues and technique beforehand

Together with the technicians involved, we are looking at the control system, sightlines and available positions. We are discussing which timings are fixed and where the performance needs some flexibility.

When touring, the differences between theatres are also important. A design must be assessed in relation to the performance space and technical capabilities of each venue.

Experience with Hans Klok

For Hans Klok — Face the Future we provided laser effects during a run of 110 shows in more than thirty theatres in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Such a production calls for attention to repeatability and collaboration. We find that preparatory work at least as interesting as the moment the effect lands in the performance.
